Okay, lets be brutally honest with each other…high fashion is great for inspiration + seeking out the “hottest” trends of the season. On the other hand, it’s not the easiest to transition in to an everyday look, unless you are Olivia Palermo. (I wish…) NYFW designers brought us trends that had our blood pumping. At the same time, fashionistas around the world were left asking questions like, “Where can I get that?… How can I pull this look off without looking ridiculous???…. Can I even pull this off?!?” Don’t worry, we have all been there more than we may like to admit.
Over the weekend, I was asked to continue with ideas + tips on how to pull off this Fall’s more “complex” trends. So here it is! The 70’s trends are still in full swing: platforms, flare-leg jeans, chokers…. truly the list goes on. My personal top three favorite trends this season are the tie-neck blouse, statement sleeves + “liquid metal” anything. So for this look I decided to knock out THREE birds with one stone. (Why not)
When I was creating this look I wanted it to be something I could see myself wearing to a date or a night on the town. I am an avid collector of vintage clothes so this denim tie neck blouse I scored a few years ago was my go to piece. Not only because it has a tie neck, but it also has oversized sleeves. Which in my opinion is a plus! Denim is casual in nature, but neutral enough to dress up or down. So think about it this way, you can dress up a pair of jeans, so when playing with a denim shirt it’s the same thing.
I chose to dress the blouse up because the liquid-metal pants are for sure a statement piece. I suggest trying something neutral (i.e. Denim Blouse) to start if you plan on taking this liquid-metal trend for a spin. So here is my tip, unless you are a pro at mixing patterns or textiles, don’t pick something crazy the first go around. No one wants to look clownish + you will if you try to mix patterns with a blouse that ties a bow around your neck. (You will thank me later). Throw on some fun pumps + you are good to go!

The runways this season are overflowing with trends since past. You see designers creating menswear-inspired clothes which haven’t been big in a hot minute. One of the more popular trends seems to be a mix of dress-pants, suit pants or slacks. These designs range from pinstripes, to tailoring + a loose fit. This weekend in Oxford I decided to take this Fall trend head on.
Many times when I am creating an outfit I start with a statement piece. I find it easier to build your outfit around a more complex piece, than starting off with the basics. Here in the South the temperature is starting to drop, but isn’t quite cool enough for the trendy heavy-layering of sports coats + blazers. I opted for a sequined shoulder crop-top that I found at Target a few seasons back. The top has a lot of bright colors, so you can pair it with various outfits. It has ended up being a favorite of mine because of this.
I chose a basic pair of icy gray, pleat-front dress pants to wear with the statement top. The gray-blue color of the pants blended perfectly with the cool blue tones in the top. Gray or Sharkskin according to Pantone’s Fall 2016 color report is on trend this season. These dress pants seem to be a mix of Sharkskin and Airy Blue from Pantone’s Color Report this Fall. My Aunt gifted me these vintage Dior dress pants from her own collection from the 80’s.
For my shoes I chose a cobalt blue pair of caged heels. I love a statement heel! A lot of people want to be match-matchy, but I find outfits to be more visually appealing when there is something unexpected. Since my pants were a gray-blue + the top has cool blue tones, this look worked perfectly. Don’t be afraid to mix it up!
As far as accessories go, I kept it pretty simple. I usually wear very bold accessories, but since there was so much going on with the top I didn’t want to over do it. I wore a pair of triangular silver + turquoise stone earrings. This played off of the other blue tones in the outfit. I chose to wear a pair of orange-toned, leather trimmed, Fendi aviator style sunglasses. (That was a mouth-full!) The crop-top has small hints of orange in it. You can never go wrong when pairing complementary colors in an outfit. I actually encourage it! Lastly, I wore my everyday pieces, a silver Fendi watch + Cartier LOVE bracelet.
